In Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War (and in a flashback sequence during Avengers: Endgame), action star extraordinaire Frank Grillo portrayed Crossbones, aka Brock Rumlow, a skull-mask-wearing villain. Grillo's version of the character was killed in Civil War, as part of that film's inciting incident, but the question lingers, will we ever see Grillo as Crossbones again?
In January during an interview, Grillo stated to Collider that he is, indeed, reprising Crossbones in the upcoming animated series What If...? . He stated and I quote "Yeah, no, I'm in it. I've been doing it." While that is good news, it doesn't address the question of Crossbones in live action content. According to Grillo, that’s not going to happen. In February, Grillo was very plain about Crossbones’ lack of future in the MCU while speaking with Variety. As the actor put it:
They’re done with me. Because of the way the stories wound up being told and just how big the stories became, the Crossbones of it wasn’t really part of the future of the Avengers.
Now, it is important to clarify that just because Frank Grillo thinks that Crossbones won’t be brought back to life doesn’t mean the character is gone from the MCU space entirely. We hope Grillo is wrong about Crossbones' future and recently some hope of his return was sparked. On the May 1st bonus episode of The Original Jeek Podcast guest Boyd Melson brought up Grillo and his future during an MCU chat. Give a listen!
I got a feeling they are gonna bring him back...He told me...that he signed for two additional Avengers roles, movies. Post that one (Civil War).
